Organizing to win "College For All" in New York

This action is for everyone who lives in New York . We want to organize people to put pressure on members of Congress (or people who are running to become members of Congress) to cancel all student debt and make public universities completely free. This can take many forms. Reach out to each other, start talking and making plans. Here is some information that you might find helpful.

Senators Chuck Schumer (D) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D) have not yet taken a position on the College for All Act of 2019. Can you convince them to co-sponsor it?

Use the comments below to plan and coordinate with each other on a state-wide level.

Resources

The Indivisible Guide provides good advice about how to set up a meeting with your members of congress (or the people currently campaigning for office), how to show up at town halls, how to write letters to the editor, etc. We can do all of that and more. Feel free to get creative and come up with your own plans in addition to these tried and true methods.

Use this data sheet :arrow_right: StudentDebt_NY.pdf (1.1 MB) about student debt for the whole state of New York.

I’d contacted Chuck Schumer’s office several times by email and phone about student loan debt and I felt that I received retaliation. Now, the government is threatening to garnish my wages. I earned less than $15,000 last year…

Hi @Meri, are these federal student loans? My understanding is that due to the CARES Act you should not be getting garnished at all during this time of COVID-19. But maybe there is some special weird quirk going on here. Can you send me more details to thomas [at] debtcollective [dot] org?

The Student Borrower Protection Center is suing Betsy DeVos for illegally garnishing people in violation of CARES right now. If this is happening to you, we should put you in touch with them: U.S. Department of Education and Secretary DeVos Sued for Illegally Seizing Student Borrowers’ Paychecks During Coronavirus Emergency - Student Borrower Protection Center

Schumer is not great, but I don’t think this has anything to do with you contacting him.
