Hi @dgurtner, I’m not quite sure what you are saying. Have you taken a look at the sample letter? CA AG Action - Google Docs
Just putting the finishing touches on mine and I will probably be sending it off tomorrow.
Please comment below if you have gotten a response.
So far the responses I have seen from the CA AG have been disappointing to say the least. What we need is the right staff person in the CA AG office who deals with student debt issues. But we don’t know who that is and that information is not public.
Instead the CA AG office has what they call a “public inquiry unit” which basically serves as a buffer or intake center. Communication from the public goes through them and they route it to the correct person.
I spoke with someone named Susana Fernandez in the public inquiry unit. She told me that she would route your letters to the appropriate staffer in the CA AG office. Based on her responses, it looks like she is not doing that and instead is giving us the runaround with a BS response that just lists a bunch of other people to contact at the Department of Education, CFPB, etc. It is obvious that she is either not reading your letters at all, or she doesn’t understand what they are about (which is not surprising since she is not the right person to understand them! We need her to put is in touch with the right person!)
I will be following up with Susana Fernandez. If we cannot get the CA AG office to take us seriously, we might have to change tactics and get a little more aggressive. But I remain hopeful that we can get the right point person and progress with this in a more cooperative fashion.
I’m going to assume by the specific wording of your article, that even if we attended school in CA, but now reside elsewhere, this won’t apply to us.
HI @SteveS801, it still applies to you, but you would write to the attorney general in the state you currently live in instead of to the CA AG.
What state do you live in? We are slowly but surely adding more states to this campaign, so if we don’t already have a campaign set up for your state we might have one soon.
I emailed you my letter as it is now and would love some feedback if you think it is good to send - thanks!
Hi everyone, so far the CA AG office has been stonewalling us. Let’s try something different. Instead of sending this letter to the Public Inquiry Unit, let’s try sending it directly to this address:
If you have already sent in a letter please resend it to this new address and bcc me when you do.
Time to escalate!
Thanks
Sent me email lastnite. This will be the 2nd letter to the CA attorney general. First time just got a letter of receipt. Hopefully this will get further attention
I have sent one just now.
I live in California now but went to school in Oregon. Is there one for Oregon?
You’ll want to contact the CA AG as you’re now technically a CA constituent.
Hi @nenadom, you are going to want to contact the CA AG about this. It doesn’t matter if you went to school in another state, it is the CA AG that is supposed to do this on behalf of all citizens of CA. The OR AG office won’t care about you now that you don’t live in OR anymore.
Hi @Thomas_Gokey! Thanks for the info. Are there examples of what might be most helpful to include in the section of the letter marked [TELL YOUR STORY HERE]? Also, I did not file an individual DTR, but would still like to send a letter to the AG. Do you know if I have to have filed an individual DTR previously in order to be a part of the AG group action? Appreciate your help!
I sent my email moments ago. Just now seeing the response letter. Ugh.
Yeah, this response letter doesn’t mention group wide discharge whatsoever. It’s like he’s trying to stonewall us just like Betsy DeVos…
I also got the same letter less than a week after I sent my email to them.
